The wet season roughly doubles what a ride to the health centre costs

The Safe Birth transport voucher was originally set at a single value across the year, calculated from an average boda fare between the villages we register in and the health centres those mothers deliver at.

Field officers in Koboko kept reporting the same problem. Between June and October the roads soften, riders charge more, and some refuse the journey at night at any price. A voucher that was adequate in February was being topped up out of a mother's own pocket in August.

Vouchers issued in Koboko are now seasonal. It costs more across the year and it means the voucher does what it was meant to do in the months when it matters most.
